How it works
The tuner uses the McLeod Pitch Method (MPM) via pitchfinder to estimate the fundamental frequency of what you play, then converts it to a note name and cents-off value. Same algorithm trusted by orchestra tuners.

The microphone is requested only when you tap Start. Audio is analysed locally — no upload, no server, no recording. The promise is enforced by the code, not the policy.
Play a single, sustained note. Bow steadily. Avoid background noise. The tuner is most accurate above mezzo-piano — long notes give the algorithm more to work with.
Default A4 = 440 Hz, the modern standard. Many orchestras (Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, much of European symphonic practice) tune to A4 = 442 Hz for a slightly brighter sound. Use the A4 selector in the tool above if your group tunes higher.
